Choosing Your Own Path: Why I Chose Self Employment

Updated: May 3

I’m not going to pretend it’s been an easy ride to get here. Becoming self employed didn’t happen overnight, and it certainly didn’t come without sacrifice. But looking back, I can say with full confidence it was worth it.

Like many people, I started my career working for others. I followed the traditional path, showing up, doing the work, chasing promotions, and waiting for compensation to match the value I was delivering. But more often than not, it just didn’t add up. Either the opportunity for career growth was limited, or the salary didn’t reflect the hours and energy I was putting in. It was frustrating, disheartening, and honestly, unsustainable.

Eventually, I hit a point where I had to ask myself a very honest question: What do I want my life to look like?

That single question changed everything. It made me reflect on what truly matters: freedom, flexibility, meaningful growth, and the ability to take charge of my future. That was the moment I knew I had to build something for myself.

Self employment isn’t for everyone. It requires grit, discipline, and a willingness to bet on yourself even when it’s uncomfortable. There are no paid vacations, no built in PTO, and no one telling you what the next step is. But what you gain is something so much more powerful: ownership of your time, unlimited potential for growth, and the freedom to align your work with your values.

Now, my growth isn’t capped by a title or salary band. It’s exponential because it’s in my hands. And that’s a trade off I’ll take every time.

If you’re on the fence or wondering if there’s more out there for you, I hope this encourages you to pause and reflect. Ask yourself what kind of life you want then get to work building it.
